Party Shuffle

Here are the 1st 10 songs that come up on my iTunes when I put it on shuffle mode (no skipping, I promise):

"Family Tree"
Ben Kweller's
Sha Sha.

Kweller is my 2nd favorite Ben, behind Folds but before Lee. I'm a firm supporter of the use of "ba-ba's" in the chorus of songs (i.e. the "ba-ba's" in Death Cab for Cutie's "The Sound of Settling"). They're always fun to sing along to.

"My Name is Trouble"
Nightmare of You
Nightmare of You

I was really into the Movielife (as with most Drive-Thru Records bands) when I was a kid, so I followed Brandon to his next project and liked this album a lot. I can appreciate his attempt to build these songs on the strength of word choice and word play. Purposely mispronouncing "pallor" in the line "I've never seen a pair of digits quite like yours before / And I have traveled shore to shore in such arduous pallor " may not make any grammatical sense, but it is endearing in its own way. As for this song in particlar, it's no less than my 3rd or 4th favorite on the album.

"Over the Rainbow"
Judy Garland
The Definitive Collection

The Wizard of Oz is one of those RARE examples of a movie actually being better than the book. That really doesn't happen often.

"Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now"
the Smiths
Louder than Bombs

"I was looking for a job, and I found a job / And Heaven knows I'm miserable now" was one of the wittiest and charming and most devastating lines Morrissey ever wrote. And that means a lot, because he wrote quite a few.

"Pink Trianle"
Weezer
Pinkerton

I know this album meant a lot to everyone, but it really meant a lot to me. Matt Sharp singing back-up vocals on the line "We were good as married in my mind / But married in my mind's no good" is that little extra attention to detail that makes this song special.

"Nobody Girl"
Ryan Adams
Gold

He's kind of a poor man's Connor Oberst, but Adams should still be commended for being so prolific a songwriter. I don't think he gets nearly enough credit for that.

"I'm Down"
The Beatles
Anthology 2 [Disc 1]

The highlight of this song is Paul McCartney barking like a dog into the microphone at the 1:37 mark.

"Taking Control"
Eisley
Combinations

They're pretty girls, but God, they put me to SLEEP. Boring!

"Fuck You Aurora"
Alkaline Trio
Maybe I'll Catch Fire

"Fuck You Aurora" is a great song title, and "You have to be the prettiest gravedigger I've ever seen" is a great line. But this album didn't mean as much to me growing up as From Here to Infirmary did.

"Horn Intro"
Modest Mouse
Good News For People Who Love Bad News

This one doesn't count, because it's not technically a song in the conventional sense of the word. And it's just as well, because aside from Lonesome Crowded West -- and maybe The Moon & Antarctica -- I don't like Modest Mouse much at all anymore. Blech.

"Bucky Done Gone"
M.I.A.
Arular

You sure get a lot of points for name-dropping M.I.A. these days, don't you? Haha. But yeah, it's still an awesome song. So far, this is the only one of these that I felt absolutely compelled to play twice.
